Belgium Flanders Details
As one of the multicultural microcosms in the heart of Europe, mixing contemporary society with a rich history, Belgium provides an enjoyable and exciting study abroad experience. You’ll walk through medieval town squares and streets in the midst of a thoroughly modern country that has influences in its culture from the French, Dutch, Austrians, and Spanish. Many towns stage reenactments of medieval times once a year, when the whole town is set to look and live as centuries before. Belgium’s cuisine reflects its varied people and history, boasting one of the best experiences for your palate imaginable. And, of course, there’s chocolate!
Belgium consists of three regions: Flanders in the north where most of the people speak Dutch; Wallonia in the south, where the majority is French speaking; and Brussels, the bilingual capital located in the center of the country. Both the AFS Flanders and Wallonia programs host students in Brussels, as well as their own areas. In the north, Dutch-speaking Flemings live in a flatland crisscrossed by canals. It boasts the medieval cities of Antwerp, Bruges, and Ghent. Being hosted in the French-speaking Community of Belgium, you’ll get to know the Walloons who live among the rolling hills of the Ardennes sprinkled with castles and the capital city of Brussels—home to both the European Union and NATO.
18+ Community Service
Ductch Program: AFS Flanders will meet you upon arrival and escort you to a camp where you will participate in a four-day orientation that explores life in Belgium and the AFS Flanders Community Service program. During these four days you will attend workshops on Belgium’s history and customs, its public transportation systems, and your expectations for the program.
Then you will arrive in your new community, meet your host family, and begin your community service project, which might include working with children, the elderly, the physically challenged or recent immigrants. Other projects focusing on environmental issues, education, arts, music, and theater may be available. You’ll experience the warmth of Belgium family life, as well as the gratification of making a difference in people’s lives. You’ll receive a language CD-ROM with an exercise handbook to help you study the Dutch language. The first two months you get follow-up sessions, twice a week, on the use of the CD-ROM.
AFS-Belgium Flander will organize various activities, depending on the community in which you live. These may include culture trips, barbecues, short domestic trips, and excursions out Belgium. Some of these activities are optional and participants are expected to cover the additional cost. Thanks to Belgium’s central location and small size, the U.K., Netherlands, France, and Germany are no more than a few hours away by train. Some AFS Participants choose to visit these countries on their own during breaks.
