Australia Details
The “land down under” is the smallest continent in the world, though it is as large as the United States, with a population less than that of Texas. Even though English is the official language, immigrants from 165 different nations comprise 20 percent of the population, creating a rainbow of people. Australia’s culture weaves together threads from all over the globe, and multicultural celebrations and festivals are as integral to the country as cricket and kangaroos. Australia also has a wide range of natural wonders, including the Great Barrier Reef, beautiful beaches, lush rainforests, vast deserts, and unique wildlife. It is also home to the Aborigines, the oldest surviving human society in the world, with a culture dating back at least 50,000 years. Australians, or Aussies as they are affectionately called, are known for their open, laid-back, and welcoming approach to life. They love the outdoors and sports, and throughout the year can be found hiking, surfing, or even skiing.

Year and Semester
School runs from January through December and is generally divided into four terms with breaks in between. You will most likely attend a public school where uniforms are mandatory. You’ll study required courses such as English, history, math, science, and geography, as well as choosing from electives such as art, music, and sports. Extracurricular activities include clubs and musical groups before school or during lunch break, with intramural sporting events after school.

Your friends will involve you in their favorite pastimes, like attending concerts, playing sports, and going out in groups. AFS Australia also organizes additional activities for you and your fellow AFS Participants. Nationally organized safari tours (optional) are also available throughout your stay.

Summer Homestay Outdoor Education Program
Imagine a summer that combines family life, community service, and an exciting Outward Bound adventure—what a great way to experience Australia! During the first six weeks you’ll get to know your host family, meet other AFS Exchange Students, and participate in valuable volunteer work in your local community. For the last eight days you’ll attend an Outward Bound program with the group, where activities include bush walking, mountain climbing, and much more!
